OpenAI Prepares GPT-5.1 Series with Reasoning and Pro Models
OpenAI is preparing to release the GPT-5.1 series, featuring three variants: GPT-5.1, GPT-5.1 Reasoning, and GPT-5.1 Pro. The new models are expected to roll out soon on Azure, continuing the company’s pattern of releasing updates every three to four months following the August launch of GPT-5.
The GPT-5.1 Reasoning model, also referred to as “Thinking,” is designed to handle multi-step problem solving and deeper logical processing. It may allocate more computing time to complex questions and improve performance on tasks requiring detailed reasoning or planning. The Pro version targets enterprise and power users, offering priority access and expanded capacity at a subscription cost of around $200 per month.
Alongside the new models, OpenAI has updated its Codex lineup with GPT-5 Codex Mini, a smaller and more cost-effective coding model. Codex Mini provides up to 50% higher rate limits and can automatically switch users approaching their usage caps, helping maintain workflow continuity. The upcoming GPT-5.1 release is also expected to enhance Codex performance.
The GPT-5.1 family focuses on improved reasoning, faster response times, and enhanced context handling, positioning it to compete with new AI systems from major rivals releasing their next-generation models.
