Altman Says AI Benefits Justify Accepting Some Risks

Oct 5, 2026
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says broad access to AI justifies accepting some misuse, while rejecting stricter controls favored by Anthropic.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, says the benefits of artificial intelligence justify accepting some harmful uses, Reuters reports. He argued that AI should remain broadly accessible so people can decide how to use it.

Altman said OpenAI and Anthropic differ on regulation. He rejected the idea that a single AI company should tightly control access to powerful systems to prevent hacks, scams and other misuse, calling that trade unacceptable.

OpenAI supports a lighter regulatory approach. Altman said beneficial uses would exceed harmful ones, although he previously supported Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's proposal to slow AI capability development.
