Apple Explores Humanoid and Non-Humanoid Robots for Smart Home Applications
Apple is reportedly exploring the development of both humanoid and non-humanoid robots as part of its future smart home ecosystem. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, these robotic systems are currently in the early proof-of-concept stage. The company is focusing on how users perceive robots, emphasizing sensing hardware and software over physical appearance.
The timeline for mass production of these robots is projected to be no earlier than 2028, as Apple continues to test the viability of core technologies and product ideas. This approach is consistent with Apple's cautious strategy in new product categories, as seen with previous projects like the Apple Car, which did not progress beyond the concept stage.
Apple's openness in sharing its robotics research during this early stage is notable, possibly aimed at attracting talent to support its development efforts. The company's exploration includes a range of robotic systems, from simple devices to complex humanoids, potentially integrating into a smart home ecosystem.
While the industry debates the merits of humanoid versus non-humanoid designs, Apple's focus remains on the interaction and perception of these robots by users, rather than their anthropomorphic characteristics. This strategic direction suggests that sensing technologies will be central to Apple's robotic innovations.
