Apple Adds Photo Authenticity Tool to iPhone 18 Pro

Apple Reference Image captures signed sensor data and creates an unalterable image that users can compare with edited versions of a photo.

Apple announced in a press release that its new Apple Reference Image feature will help users verify photos captured with iPhone 18 Pro models. The feature records signed data from the main camera sensor when a user takes a photo in Reference mode.

Apple's Private Cloud Compute service turns the sensor data into an unalterable reference image. Users can view this image beside the main photo in the Photos app and compare them to identify edits.

What the mechanism establishes is narrower than it may appear. It attests that a particular image came off the sensor of a particular device without modification. It says nothing about whether the scene in front of the camera was staged, and nothing about images taken on any other device.

Apple will provide APIs in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 27 so third party apps can display reference images. The company also plans to support the SynthID standard for identifying images generated or edited with AI.
