Arelion and Nokia demonstrate 21% optical spectrum increase

Oct 8, 2026
Arelion and Nokia completed a live network trial between Amsterdam and London that expanded usable optical spectrum by about 21 percent.

Arelion and Nokia Corporation completed a live network field trial on a 500 kilometer route from Amsterdam to London, the companies announced in a press release. The trial expanded usable optical spectrum by approximately 21 percent over Arelion's existing fiber infrastructure.

The test used Nokia's 1830 Global Express Super C and Super L open line system, CHMQ6 thin transponder modules, and ICE-X 400G and 800G ZR+ coherent pluggable optics. Client splitting also allowed wavelength capacity to be divided across different high speed services.

Arelion said the additional capacity can support its Managed Optical Fiber Network service, which provides dedicated optical connections between data centers and other infrastructure. The tested equipment can also support enterprises distributing AI workloads across data centers and cloud environments.
