AWS Opens Bedrock Access to OpenAI GPT Models From Canada

Oct 20, 2026
AWS now lets customers access OpenAI GPT-5.6, GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 models from its two Canadian regions through Amazon Bedrock.

Amazon Web Services says in a company blog post that customers can now access OpenAI GPT-5.6, GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 models from the AWS Canada Central and Canada West regions. Amazon Bedrock routes requests from the Canadian source region to supported regions for processing, without requiring applications to manage the routing.

Available models include GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna, GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna, and GPT-6.1 Sol. Customers can use a US geographic profile to keep processing within Canada and the US, or a global profile to access capacity across supported AWS regions. Global profiles for GPT-5.6 are available only from Canada Central.

The models support text and image input, text output, tool calling, reasoning mode, prompt caching and context windows of one million tokens. Developers can access them through the OpenAI Responses API, OpenAI Chat Completions API or Amazon Bedrock Converse API using the Bedrock Runtime endpoint.
