BFI Releases AI Recommendations for UK Screen Sector
The British Film Institute (BFI) has published a report titled 'AI in the Screen Sector: Perspectives and Paths Forward,' outlining nine key recommendations for the UK screen sector to adapt to the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The report aims to position the UK as a global leader in creative technology, according to Screen Daily.
The recommendations include developing a robust licensing framework to address copyright concerns related to generative AI, enhancing AI training for the creative workforce, and ensuring transparency when AI is used in screen content. The BFI also emphasizes the need for targeted financial support for the UK's creative technology sector and investment in accessible tools and training for independent creators.
Current industry initiatives include the Charismatic consortium, backed by Channel 4 and Aardman Animations, which is working on AI prototypes to support under-represented content creators. The BBC is also piloting AI initiatives for subtitling and metadata generation. The report highlights the importance of acting quickly to harness AI's potential while addressing challenges such as the erosion of traditional business models and public trust in screen content.
