Boston Dynamics and Toyota Research Institute Advance Humanoid Robotics
Boston Dynamics and Toyota Research Institute have made significant strides in humanoid robotics by demonstrating a Large Behavior Model (LBM) that powers the Atlas humanoid robot. Announced in a press release, this advancement allows Atlas to perform a series of complex tasks involving both object manipulation and locomotion without the need for new programming.
The demonstration showcased Atlas using whole-body movements to complete tasks such as packing, sorting, and organizing, while adapting to unexpected challenges like moving boxes. This capability is achieved by a single LBM that controls the entire robot, integrating the use of hands and feet seamlessly.
This breakthrough is part of a joint research initiative started in October 2024 between Boston Dynamics and Toyota Research Institute, aimed at accelerating the development of smart robots. The project highlights the potential of AI technologies in creating general-purpose humanoid assistants, with the LBM enabling rapid skill acquisition through human demonstrations.
