Anthropic Says Claude Identified an Uncharacterized Enzyme System

Anthropic said in a company post that Claude identified a previously uncharacterized enzyme system associated with repeating DNA sequences. The company calls the system array associated reverse transcriptases, or ART. The post also introduces a new life sciences research group and laboratory at Anthropic.

About 950 Claude agents spent 21 hours searching more than 200,000 reverse transcriptases using 210 million tokens. They selected 3,500 candidate systems, narrowed them to 20, and identified an unusual reverse transcriptase next to an array of evenly spaced DNA repeats.

Human scientists reviewed the finding and tested it in Anthropic's laboratory. Initial experiments found that the ART array produces distinct short RNA molecules, but researchers have not determined the system's biological function. ART mainly appears in bacteriophages and includes a reverse transcriptase, a neighboring partner gene, and the DNA repeat array.
