DeepSeek and Moonshot reportedly used GPT-6 Astra outputs for training
DeepSeek and Moonshot AI relied heavily on outputs from OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra to train their latest models, Reuters reports, citing The Information. The reported training benefited Moonshot AI's Kimi K3.1 Pro, released last week, and DeepSeek's V4.1-Flash 1017, released October 17.
The companies reportedly used distillation, a method that trains a model using outputs generated by another model. OpenAI, DeepSeek and Moonshot AI had not responded to requests for comment at the time of the report.
OpenAI said in a September 30 blog post that it linked a central part of a distillation campaign that began in July to people associated with Moonshot AI.
