Danish Meteorological Institute to Develop AI Weather Models with Gefion Supercomputer
The Danish Centre for AI Innovation has announced a multi-year agreement with the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) to develop next-generation AI models for weather forecasting using the Gefion supercomputer, announced in a press release. This collaboration follows successful pilot results where AI models trained on Gefion demonstrated comparable accuracy to DMI's traditional models in predicting temperature and wind, while significantly improving computational efficiency.
The new AI models, developed in just a few months, require only a fraction of the computing power and run in minutes compared to the hours needed by traditional models. This efficiency is expected to enhance daily weather forecasts and emergency response capabilities, crucial for national preparedness against extreme weather events.
The three-year agreement aims to refine and expand AI-driven weather models, incorporating additional variables such as precipitation. This collaboration is part of a broader effort to leverage AI supercomputing for advancements in meteorology and sustainability, with Gefion ranked among the world's most powerful supercomputers.
