Elections Canada Calls for AI Labels in Election Communications
Elections Canada warns that AI is making it harder for voters to identify synthetic content and understand who is behind election information, according to CBC. Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault told a House of Commons committee that Canadians increasingly use chatbots for information about voting, candidates and political platforms.
Perrault repeated his recommendation that electoral communications such as advertisements should carry legally required labels when they contain synthetic content. The proposal falls within the scope of Bill C-34, which is under review by the Canadian heritage committee.
He also recommended requiring chatbots to direct users to official sources when answering questions about voting. Elections Canada is reviewing its online content to ensure AI agents can access accurate information before six federal byelections in December.
