EPRI Advocates Nuclear Power for AI Data Centers
Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has highlighted the potential of nuclear energy to meet the growing energy demands of AI data centers. This was discussed by EPRI's Executive Director of AI and Quantum, Jeremy Renshaw, during a testimony before a U.S. House Science Subcommittee, as announced in a press release.
Renshaw emphasized that AI is rapidly transforming society, but its energy requirements are increasing unpredictably. EPRI is exploring how traditional and advanced nuclear technologies can support these needs. Traditional nuclear plants offer reliable, carbon-free baseload power, while advanced reactors like small modular reactors could provide flexible operation for high-intensity loads.
EPRI has initiated projects such as DCFlex, which explores data centers' potential to provide grid services, and the Open Power AI Consortium, which aims to develop AI models for the power sector. These efforts involve collaboration with utilities, startups, academia, and technology companies to ensure sustainable growth in AI infrastructure.
