The European Union awarded French state owned Atos Bull a €387.8 million contract to build LUMI-AI, a new AI supercomputer for Europe, Reuters reports. The order is Bull's largest to date and follows France's carveout of Bull from Atos earlier this year.

EuroHPC, the EU supercomputing body, selected Bull to build the system under its AI Factories programme. LUMI-AI will be installed beside the existing LUMI supercomputer in Finland and is expected to start operating in the second half of 2027.

Funding will be split equally between EuroHPC and the LUMI AI Factory consortium, which includes Finland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Norway and Poland. EuroHPC has an €8.2 billion budget through 2027 and has built 19 AI Factories around 12 supercomputers.

Bull will use AMD AI chips, IBM storage and Nokia networking technology. EuroHPC infrastructure is already being used by European AI developers, including OVHcloud for initial foundation model training on Germany's Jupiter system and Domyn for model training through the EUROPA consortium.
