False AI Intelligence Report Nearly Triggers US Action Against Chinese Ship

CNN reports that the US military prepared to intercept a Chinese ship in the Middle East after an intelligence report falsely identified its cargo as components of a nuclear weapons program. Officials discovered the AI assisted error shortly before the planned operation during the war with Iran this spring.

Armed US personnel were preparing to board the vessel, and military aircraft were already in the air. The underlying intelligence came from the Pacific component of United States Special Operations Command, but CNN could not determine what cargo the chatbot misidentified.

An analyst used the chatbot to combine open source information with classified signals intelligence, then used AI again to format the findings as a standard intelligence report. The report circulated through the military before officials reviewed it more closely and found the conclusion was false.

US military and intelligence units use different AI tools under varying safety and verification standards. United States Special Operations Command Pacific and the Pentagon did not respond to CNN's requests for comment.
