Frontgrade Gaisler Unveils GRAIN Line with Neuromorphic AI for Space

Apr 2, 2025
Frontgrade Gaisler has launched its GRAIN product line, featuring the Gr801 SoC with BrainChip's Akida neuromorphic technology, as announced in a press release.

Frontgrade Gaisler has launched its new Gaisler Research Artificial Intelligence NOEL-V (GRAIN) product line, featuring the Gr801 System on Chip (SoC) that integrates Akida neuromorphic technology from BrainChip. This announcement was made in a press release, highlighting the company's focus on energy-efficient AI applications for space missions.

The Swedish National Space Agency (SNSA) has awarded Frontgrade Gaisler a contract to commercialize this neuromorphic SoC for space applications. The Gr801 combines Gaisler's NOEL-V RISC-V processor with BrainChip's Akida AI processor, aiming to enhance real-time data processing, autonomous navigation, and Earth observation capabilities in space environments.

The GRAIN product line is designed to support both commercial and institutional space missions, addressing strict power and weight constraints. The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden is collaborating on this project by developing a demonstration application that utilizes a neuromorphic sensor directly connected to the Gr801 device.
