HII and Path Robotics Partner to Bring AI Welding to Shipbuilding
HII and Path Robotics have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the integration of Path’s physical AI welding technology into shipbuilding operations, announced in a press release. The collaboration aims to improve production throughput, support the shipbuilding workforce, and enhance both manned and unmanned ship construction for the U.S. Navy.
The agreement includes plans to develop autonomous shipbuilding capabilities, train workers to extend automation, and establish an intellectual property framework for AI-based welding systems. The companies will also research combining Path’s physical AI with HII’s existing shipbuilding technologies, including its ROMULUS line of unmanned surface vehicles.
Path’s Obsidian system uses proprietary sensing and vision technology to enable robotic welders to perceive and adapt to variable shipyard conditions such as fit variations and complex materials. HII currently employs automated and collaborative welders that require human oversight, but the new AI-driven approach could automate more complex welding tasks and increase efficiency.
The partnership follows HII’s reported 14% increase in shipbuilding throughput in 2025, with a target of 15% growth in 2026. By working with Path Robotics, HII seeks to further scale production and meet growing Navy demand for advanced naval vessels.
