GSMA Intelligence Puts the AI Skills Gap at 3.1 Billion People
GSMA Intelligence reports that 38% of people remain offline despite living under mobile broadband coverage, and identifies limited digital skills, user trust and AI literacy as barriers affecting 3.1 billion people, according to the report's announcement. Mobile broadband now reaches 96% of the world's population, so the gap it describes is one of capability rather than infrastructure.
The report projects that closing those capability gaps could add about $3.5 trillion to global GDP by 2030, with more than 90% of the gain going to low and middle income countries. That is a projection rather than a measurement.
Its recommendations are more specific than the usual call for training. It argues that AI awareness, online safety and information verification should be treated as baseline qualifications rather than advanced skills, that voice and conversational interfaces should be expanded in more languages, and that progress should be measured by whether people can complete tasks independently and resist fraud, rather than by familiarity with particular tools. It also notes AI cuts both ways, easing access through voice and multimedia while creating new exposure to fraud and deepfakes.
The report was authored by GSMA Intelligence and produced in collaboration with Huawei, which commissioned it and runs mobile digital training programmes of the kind the report recommends scaling.
