May 15, 2026
Huawei received the GSMA Global Mobile LATAM Award for Social Impact for its Tech4Nature Mexico project, which applies AI and cloud technologies to monitor and protect jaguars in the Dzilam de Bravo nature reserve in Yucatan.

Huawei announced in a press release that it received the GSMA Global Mobile LATAM Award for Social Impact at the M360 LATAM 2026 event. The award recognizes the Tech4Nature Mexico project, which uses advanced technology to protect jaguars in the Dzilam de Bravo nature reserve in Yucatan.

The project is part of the global Tech4Nature partnership between Huawei TECH4ALL and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It combines artificial intelligence for species detection and individual identification with community led monitoring and data analysis. Since its launch in 2022, the project has entered its second phase, involving collaboration with the government of Yucatan, C Minds, Yucatan Polytechnic University, and the local community.

A total of 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic devices have been deployed, identifying more than 147 species, including 40 endangered ones. The AI system has recognized 16 individual jaguars, providing key data for conservation planning. Huawei's cloud solutions process and analyze over 100,000 images and 600,000 audio recordings collected from the field.

The project has contributed to expanding the protected area from 69,000 to 104,000 hectares. The data driven approach supports better understanding of the local ecosystem and informs biodiversity conservation policies in the region.
