IBM and AMD Collaborate on Quantum-Centric Supercomputing
IBM and AMD have announced plans to collaborate on developing next-generation computing architectures that integrate quantum computing with high-performance computing. This initiative, announced in a press release, aims to create scalable, open-source platforms that leverage IBM's expertise in quantum computing and AMD's strengths in high-performance computing and AI accelerators.
The collaboration will focus on building a quantum-centric supercomputing architecture, where quantum computers work alongside powerful high-performance computing and AI infrastructure. This hybrid approach is designed to tackle complex problems by using the most suitable computing paradigm for each component of a problem. For instance, quantum computers could simulate atomic and molecular behaviors, while classical supercomputers handle large-scale data analysis.
IBM and AMD plan to demonstrate how their technologies can work together later this year, showcasing hybrid quantum-classical workflows. The companies are also exploring the integration of AMD's CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs with IBM's quantum systems to accelerate new algorithms that are currently beyond the reach of either technology alone. This effort could advance IBM's goal of delivering fault-tolerant quantum computers by the end of the decade.
