Introduction of Agent Communication Protocol (ACP) for AI Agents

IBM Research has introduced the Agent Communication Protocol (ACP), a new standard designed to streamline interactions between AI agents, according to a LinkedIn post by Armand Ruiz. ACP aims to address the complexities and integration challenges posed by diverse communication standards in current agent systems.

ACP focuses on practical features that facilitate automation, agent-to-agent collaboration, UI integration, and developer tooling. It emphasizes natural language flexibility and model dependency management, which are crucial for agents handling ambiguous inputs and relying on externally hosted models. This approach ensures seamless interoperability and simplified development, reducing overhead for developers.

The protocol is currently in its alpha phase, with discussions ongoing about its implementation and integration with existing systems like MCP. Topics under consideration include data encoding methods, agent-to-agent communication strategies, and privacy-preserving data persistence. These discussions are open to contributions from the community, as seen in a GitHub discussion.
