IRENA and Canadian G7 Presidency Highlight AI’s Role in Power System Transformation
International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Canadian G7 Presidency have released a report on the role of artificial intelligence in transforming global power systems, announced in a press release. The report, titled Digitalisation and AI for Power Systems Transformation: Perspectives for the G7, was presented during the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers' Meeting held on October 30–31 in Toronto, Canada.
The study outlines how digitalisation and AI-based applications can reduce electricity costs, improve system reliability, and strengthen energy security. It details five key areas where AI can add value: monitoring, forecasting, operational optimisation, end-use automation, and transparency.
IRENA’s analysis encourages G7 policymakers to assess benefits-oriented power system strategies, enhance data systems and cybersecurity, address digital skills gaps, and strengthen investment planning, particularly in emerging and developing economies. The report also emphasizes cooperation between energy, digital, and public sectors to support a coordinated power system transformation.
