ITRI Unveils 3.2 Tbps Silicon Photonics Optical Engine

Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute unveiled a silicon photonics optical engine with 3.2 Tbps of total capacity at Taiwan Innotech Expo 2026.

Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) unveiled a 3.2 Tbps silicon photonics optical engine at Taiwan Innotech Expo 2026, it stated in a press release. The technology was developed with support from the Department of Industrial Technology at the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The engine uses light to transmit data through integrated high speed channels. It provides about 400 GB per second of total capacity, twice that of the previous 1.6T generation, while reducing signal loss and heat compared with conventional copper interconnects.

ITRI has formed a network of more than 20 supply chain partners covering chip design, fabrication, testing and packaging. It has also worked with international companies on specifications for 3.2T systems.
