Meta Unveils Aria Gen 2 Glasses for Advanced AI Research
Meta has introduced the Aria Gen 2 glasses, a significant upgrade to its Project Aria initiative, announced on their website. These next-generation research glasses are designed to advance machine perception, contextual AI, and robotics by providing researchers with cutting-edge tools and datasets.
The Aria Gen 2 glasses come equipped with a state-of-the-art sensor suite, including an RGB camera, 6DOF SLAM cameras, eye tracking cameras, spatial microphones, and more. Notably, they feature new sensors embedded in the nosepad, such as a PPG sensor for heart rate measurement and a contact microphone for voice differentiation. These enhancements allow for ultra low-power, on-device processing of SLAM, eye tracking, hand tracking, and speech recognition using Meta's custom silicon.
Designed for all-day usability, the glasses offer six to eight hours of continuous use and are lightweight at approximately 75 grams. They also include foldable arms for easy portability and provide audio feedback through open-ear force-canceling speakers, facilitating user-in-the-loop system prototyping.
The Aria Gen 2 glasses are already being utilized in innovative ways, such as by Envision, a company focused on accessibility solutions for blind and low-vision individuals. Envision is exploring the integration of its Ally AI assistant and spatial audio to enhance indoor navigation experiences using the glasses' advanced features. Meta plans to share more details about the availability of these glasses to research partners in the coming months.
