Novatron Fusion Group Study Identifies Finland as Top Candidate for Nordic Fusion Reactor
Novatron Fusion Group plans to build a pilot fusion reactor in the Nordic region during the 2030s, announced in a press release. A study by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland found that Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden all meet technical requirements for hosting such a facility, but Finland leads in regulatory readiness.
The study evaluated regulatory, environmental, operational, and societal factors across the four countries. It identified the Helsinki metropolitan area, the Stockholm–Nyköping region, and the Copenhagen–Malmö corridor as the most suitable areas for a pilot fusion reactor. Existing industrial zones with strong transport links and proximity to research hubs were considered key advantages.
Finland’s ongoing renewal of its Nuclear Energy Act, expected to take effect in 2027, will simplify licensing and reduce barriers for pilot fusion sites. Sweden’s legislation includes fusion reactors but remains largely focused on fission. Denmark and Norway currently operate under older nuclear regulations that do not specifically address fusion.
The next phase of the project will involve detailed site-specific investigations with Nordic stakeholders and industrial partners. Earlier in 2025, energy company St1 invested €13 million in Novatron Fusion Group to support the region’s clean energy transition.
