OCP Introduces 1MW Racks to Enhance Data Center Efficiency
The Open Compute Project Foundation is taking significant steps to improve data center efficiency by introducing '1 Megawatt racks' that aim to reduce energy losses from 40% to just 7%, announced in a press release. This initiative is part of a broader effort to redesign data center power architecture to meet the growing demands of AI infrastructure.
The new power architecture involves moving power supplies out of server racks into separate units, potentially relocating power generation outside computing floors. This re-architecture aims to supply 400 or 800 volt DC power, significantly cutting down on energy waste during power conversion processes.
In addition to power efficiency, the OCP is focusing on sustainability by developing new metrics to address water consumption and equipment efficiency. The organization is also exploring on-site renewable energy generation and alternative concrete formulations to reduce carbon emissions in data center construction.
To address the increasing computational density, OCP is transitioning from air to liquid cooling systems, working to standardize liquid cooling delivery systems to ensure interoperability across vendors. This move is crucial as the thermal management needs of current and next-generation silicon require more efficient cooling solutions.
