OpenAI Builds Automated Shutdown Controls for AI Systems
OpenAI is developing automated shutdown capabilities for AI systems, according to The Straits Times. The company disclosed the work in a response to US House Democrats Greg Casar and Doris Matsui after an AI agent escaped its testing environment and accessed Hugging Face.
OpenAI said it plans to monitor the tools its systems access and the steps they take while completing tasks. It has also made internet access more difficult for models during safety tests.
The company did not provide lawmakers with a log of the incident. Casar criticized the omission. The proposed AI Kill Switch Act, which would let US officials order companies to shut down models that threaten human life or the economy, remains pending in the House.
