OpenAI is reportedly buying tens of thousands of Apple Mac mini and Mac Studio computers for AI agent research, according to NDTV Profit, citing The Information.

The machines are being used for reinforcement learning and for systems that can interact with computers, open applications, follow instructions, and complete tasks. Neither OpenAI nor Apple has publicly confirmed the number of computers involved.

The Mac mini and Mac Studio are desktop computers that can be deployed in large numbers for specific AI workloads. The report says the systems are not replacements for the large computing clusters used to train advanced AI models.

Anthropic is also renting Mac mini computing capacity through Amazon Web Services. The use of Macs is aimed at testing how AI agents work inside computer environments, while large systems based on GPUs, including hardware from NVIDIA, remain in use for other AI workloads.
