OpenAI Claims Solution to Navier Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
OpenAI says an unreleased AI model resolved the Navier Stokes Millennium Prize problem, according to The Washington Post. The company released a technical paper describing a finite time singularity in the three dimensional equations, which model fluid flow.
OpenAI says about 10,000 concurrent agents produced the result in 88 hours, using 2.7 million messages and roughly 130 billion output tokens. GPT-6 Astra then spent another 17 hours formalizing and checking the proof in Lean.
The paper still requires review by mathematicians. OpenAI does not plan to claim the associated $1 million prize. The release also prompted a dispute with NYU professor Tristan Buckmaster, who questioned whether the project drew on work he conducted with mathematician Levent Alpöge. OpenAI said its solution differed significantly and that it did not access specific user data for the project.
