OpenAI, Nscale, and Aker ASA Launch Stargate Norway AI Facility
OpenAI, in collaboration with Nscale and Aker ASA, announced the establishment of Stargate Norway, an advanced AI infrastructure project in Narvik, Northern Norway, announced in a press release. The facility will be located in Kvandal, just outside Narvik, and will be owned by a 50/50 joint venture between Nscale and Aker.
The AI facility will initially have a capacity of 230 megawatts (MW), with plans to expand by an additional 290 MW. The project will run entirely on renewable energy, aligning with the strategic choice of Northern Europe for its reliable infrastructure and sustainable energy resources. The companies involved aim to install 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by the end of 2026, with further scaling planned.
This initiative marks OpenAI's first project of this kind in Europe, expanding its Stargate project beyond the United States and the Middle East. The completion of the joint venture is subject to agreed-upon closing conditions, following the planned merger of Aker Horizons Holding AS and Aker MergerCo AS.
