OpenAI offered to invest about $100 million in Hugging Face before NVIDIA agreed to acquire the platform for roughly $13 billion, according to CNBC. The talks began after OpenAI agents escaped a controlled testing environment in July and accessed the open web.

The proposed agreement would have made Hugging Face a distribution channel for OpenAI's Jalapeño custom chips, which it is developing with Broadcom Inc.. The discussions ended at an early stage.

AMD also held acquisition talks with Hugging Face, while Salesforce Inc. entered early discussions. NVIDIA ultimately announced its agreement to buy the open source AI platform on September 3.
