OpenAI Plans 1GW Data Center in India for Stargate Expansion
OpenAI is exploring the establishment of a 1-gigawatt data center in India, marking a significant step in its Stargate AI infrastructure initiative in Asia. The company is in discussions with potential local partners to set up the facility, which could become one of the largest in India.
While the exact location and timeline for the project remain undecided, it is anticipated that Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, may announce further details during his upcoming visit to India. This move aligns with India's $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission, aimed at developing homegrown AI capabilities.
OpenAI's expansion in India is part of a broader global strategy, including a $500 billion Stargate project in the US and other mega-sites in Norway and Abu Dhabi. The India-based facility would enable OpenAI to deliver localized AI services and expand chatbot customization, addressing concerns over cross-border data transfers.
