OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, is preparing to file confidentially for an initial public offering in the coming weeks, according to The New York Times. The company is working with bankers at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to finalize the paperwork.

The filing could occur as soon as Friday, with a public debut possible in September. The decision follows a recent federal court ruling that dismissed a lawsuit from Elon Musk, removing a key legal obstacle to the listing.

OpenAI was most recently valued at around 852 billion dollars after raising 122 billion dollars earlier this year. The company plans to spend heavily on semiconductors and data centers in the next five years, prompting the move toward public markets.

The IPO would mark one of the largest in Silicon Valley’s history and comes as other major technology firms, including SpaceX and Anthropic, prepare their own offerings.
