OpenAI Backs Valthos in $30 Million Biosecurity Funding Round
OpenAI, along with Founders Fund and Lux Capital, has invested $30 million in Valthos, a New York-based biosecurity startup that has emerged from stealth to develop AI-driven tools for detecting and countering biological threats, reports Bloomberg.
Valthos’s software aggregates biological data from government and commercial sources, such as air and wastewater monitoring, and applies AI models to identify potential bioweapon risks. The company is also building systems to update medical countermeasures in response to evolving threats. Its co-founders, Kathleen McMahon and Tess van Stekelenburg, bring experience from Palantir Technologies and Lux Capital, respectively.
The nine-person startup plans to collaborate with pharmaceutical and government partners to produce and distribute countermeasures. According to OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon, this marks OpenAI’s first biosecurity investment, with potential for further involvement in the field.
The funding comes as biosecurity faces declining government and private investment, while advancements in AI heighten concerns about misuse in biotechnology. Valthos aims to address these risks by combining AI analysis with real-time detection systems to strengthen defenses against engineered biological attacks.
