Pearson Warns AI Adoption Is Outpacing Skilled Worker Training

Pearson says AI adoption is moving faster than education and training in skilled trade, technical and service occupations. The company said in a press release that its research identifies a triple capability gap in role specific AI literacy, human skills and practical knowledge passed down by experienced workers.

The report found that replacing people who retire, change careers or leave the workforce accounts for 99% of skilled job openings in the UK and 98.5% in the US. Fewer than half of industrial machinery mechanics said their training prepares them for work that uses AI. Among pharmacy technicians surveyed, 98% considered exactness and accuracy extremely important, while 44% viewed the consequences of errors as extremely serious.

Pearson recommends role specific AI training alongside communication, collaboration, adaptability and critical judgment. It also calls for mentoring, observation, feedback, simulation and practical experience to preserve institutional knowledge as experienced workers retire. The research combines labor market and AI exposure analysis in the US, UK and China with surveys, interviews and roundtables involving employers, educators, students and workers early in their careers.
