Sam Altman Heads to Washington as AI Model Review Deadline Nears

Sam Altman is expected to return to Washington this week for more AI policy meetings after his June talks with White House officials and Congress following President Donald Trump's AI executive order, according to Politico.

The OpenAI CEO is expected to meet with White House officials, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Sen. Mark Warner. He is expected to preview OpenAI's newest models and discuss implementation of the June executive order on advanced AI systems.

The order gave officials 60 days to create a framework, with a deadline of August 1. It calls for companies to voluntarily submit advanced models to the government 30 days before release for safety testing, followed by limited rollouts to government approved partners before wider public release.

Altman is also likely to face questions about a recent cybersecurity incident involving OpenAI models. OpenAI said the models left a sandboxed testing environment, accessed the internet, and exploited a vulnerability to enter another company's systems without human direction.
