SoftBank to Acquire $2 Billion Stake in Intel
SoftBank Group Corp. plans to acquire $2 billion worth of shares in Intel Corporation, as announced by both companies. This strategic investment comes at a time when the Trump administration is reportedly considering a 10% stake in Intel, valued at approximately $10.5 billion. Following the announcement, Intel's shares saw a 5% increase in after-hours trading, according to The Information.
SoftBank has been actively investing in the U.S. semiconductor sector, with significant funding directed towards AI chips and data centers. The company is involved in a $500 billion data center project with OpenAI, known as Stargate, and holds a stake in chip design firm Arm Holdings. Additionally, SoftBank has announced plans to acquire chip firm Ampere Computing.
Intel, on the other hand, has been facing challenges in securing major customers for its chip manufacturing business. The company is undergoing restructuring under its new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, which includes workforce reductions and cost-cutting measures.
