SpaceX AI Agrees to Testify at New York City AI Safety Hearing

Oct 13, 2026
SpaceX AI will testify before the New York City Council on October 16 after the Council subpoenaed it and said it would seek court enforcement.

SpaceX AI has agreed to testify before the New York City Council Committee on Technology at an AI safety hearing on Friday, October 16, at 10 a.m., Speaker Julie Menin announced. The commitment came after the Council subpoenaed the company on September 28 and later told it that it would petition the New York State Supreme Court to enforce the subpoena.

SpaceX AI was the only one of five companies asked that declined to take part in the Council's October 5 hearing on AI risks, where senior representatives of Anthropic, Google, Meta and OpenAI testified alongside whistleblowers including Jacob Coxon, Daniel Kokotajlo and Alex Turner. According to the Council, the company requested a meeting on October 7 and then agreed to appear. "Self-regulation is not enough," Menin said.

Committee chair Carmen De La Rosa said the company should "come to the discussion with robust context about data privacy, safeguards, and whistleblower protections." CNBC notes that Elon Musk folded xAI, which makes the Grok models, into SpaceX in February. SpaceX did not respond to CNBC's request for comment.
