Stripe Introduces Token Billing Feature for AI Model Usage
Stripe has launched a private preview of a new billing feature that automates pricing and profit tracking for AI model usage, according to documentation on its website. The feature, called Billing for LLM Tokens, lets developers set a desired markup percentage over raw token costs and automatically record usage through Stripe’s AI gateway or partner integrations.
The tool synchronizes token pricing from major AI model providers and updates them automatically. Developers can configure usage-based billing by entering a margin percentage, after which Stripe creates the necessary billing resources, including meters and rate configurations. Token usage data is recorded automatically, allowing startups to bill customers accurately based on consumption.
Billing for LLM Tokens supports integrations with third-party gateways such as Vercel’s AI SDK and OpenRouter. The feature is currently in private preview, and interested developers can join a waitlist for early access.
