Tissue Dynamics and Galmed Identify New Metabolic Pathway in Cardiac Fibrosis Study
Tissue Dynamics and Galmed Pharmaceuticals announced in a press release that they have identified a previously unrecognized metabolic pathway driving cardiac fibrosis and heart failure using human cardiac organoid models. The study found that combining Aramchol Meglumine, an SCD1 inhibitor, with a selective PPARα agonist effectively targeted this mechanism.
Using its DynamiX platform and organoid models, Tissue Dynamics detected a human-specific metabolic process not observable in conventional animal studies. The combination therapy modulated mitochondrial stress and lipogenesis, two processes linked to fibrosis progression.
In inflammatory human cardiac organoids, treatment with Aramchol Meglumine and the PPARα agonist reduced fibrotic burden by about fourfold while maintaining cardiac muscle structure and metabolic function. The companies have filed a new patent application and are preparing for future IND-enabling studies.
Tissue Dynamics used its MechaniX artificial intelligence platform to help identify and validate the metabolic pathway, providing mechanistic insight into drug action through explainable AI. The collaboration supports Galmed’s research into therapies for cardiometabolic and fibrotic diseases.
