Trump Administration Backs OpenAI in New York Times Copyright Case
The Trump Administration has filed a statement of interest supporting OpenAI in its copyright lawsuit with The New York Times, according to The Verge. The filing supports OpenAI's argument that training an AI model on copyrighted text can qualify as fair use.
Federal attorneys argued that broadly requiring licenses for AI training would conflict with copyright law and restrict scientific and creative work. They said fair use still depends on the specific facts and uses involved in each case.
The Times filed the lawsuit in December 2023, alleging that OpenAI unlawfully trained its systems on the newspaper's articles. It is seeking damages from OpenAI and Microsoft. The government filing states its position but does not decide the case.
