University of Maryland and Axis Research to Build AI-Powered Surgical Performance Center
The University of Maryland, Baltimore and Axis Research & Technologies have announced a joint venture to create the nation's first AI-powered smart surgical performance center, according to a press release.
The 36,000-square-foot facility, powered by the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Axis, will combine academic and industry expertise to advance surgical training, performance, and patient care. It will feature integrated cadaveric and model training spaces, immersive simulation suites, and the OMNIMED SmartOR platform—an AI-enabled system that collects and analyzes real-time performance data across classroom, simulation, and operating room environments.
The center aims to serve as a comprehensive ecosystem for education, research, and technology, giving students, clinicians, and engineers access to data-driven insights for improving surgical performance and outcomes.

Tensordyne Napier: What If One Rack Could Do the Work of Nine?
Tensordyne
This Tensordyne whitepaper presents Napier, an inference-focused AI processor and rack-scale system based on the company’s TDN Math logarithmic number system. It examines infrastructure requirements for large mixture-of-experts and agentic models, compares major inference architecture approaches, and details the TDN AIP processor, TDN72 pod, TDN Link fabric, and Napier Ultra configuration. The paper reports simulation-based performance, cost, and accuracy-validation results, including Tensordyne’s projected comparison of one Napier rack with a nine-rack Nvidia Rubin plus Groq deployment; the chip is reported as taped out and in fabrication.
