University of Phoenix Study Examines GenAI Support for Stressed Online Students
University of Phoenix says in a press release that a peer reviewed study examined how stress, course design and generative AI affected 45 online undergraduates. The paper was published July 15 in Innovative Higher Education.
Participants reported that stress and competing responsibilities made it harder to concentrate, navigate courses and begin assignments. Some said GenAI reduced short term cognitive strain by breaking assignments into smaller steps, but they also raised concerns about dependence and unclear ethical limits.
The researchers created the Trauma Informed AI Persistence Model, which connects course structure, psychological safety, instructional support and guided GenAI use. The qualitative study relied on self reported experiences from students at one online university, and the researchers said the preliminary model requires testing across other institutions and student groups.
