US Army Develops Autonomous AI Agents for Cyberattacks
U.S. Army Cyber Command is developing a platform that would use autonomous AI agents for offensive cyber operations, The Intercept reports. Documents provided to potential contractors describe the ECHOTRIBBLE program as a way to navigate adversary infrastructure, identify targets and disable or delete threats.
The agents would receive predefined targets and triggers but operate with minimal human oversight. In one example presented to vendors, an agent placed on a laptop identifies other devices on the network and creates copies tailored for an iPad, an Apple desktop and a Windows 11 computer.
ECHOTRIBBLE is also designed to move between networked devices, reach air gapped systems and conceal outside communications. After completing a task, its agents would delete themselves. Army Cyber Command did not provide details about safeguards intended to prevent unintended damage.
