US Proposes AI Incident Notifications in China Talks

The US proposed an AI safety notification system during talks with China ahead of a meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent proposed an AI safety notification system during talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York, Reuters reports. The proposal would let the US and China notify each other about AI incidents that reach the level of a national security threat.

The two countries also discussed creating a formal AI dialogue focused on shared goals and threats. Trump and Xi discussed possible consultations on AI development in May, but no forum was established.

The proposal will be considered when Trump and Xi meet in Washington on September 24 and 25. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said export controls on advanced AI chips and semiconductor manufacturing equipment were not part of the notification talks.
