US and South Korea Back $22.3 Billion Texas Data Center Power Campus
The US Department of Commerce and South Korea selected Related Companies and NextEra Energy Resources to develop Project Star, a $22.3 billion energy campus in Encinal, Texas, the companies said in a press release. The project will have 6.47 GW of natural gas generation capacity and supply an adjacent 5 GW data center campus being developed by Related Digital.
Related Companies and NextEra Energy Resources will develop, build and operate the generation facilities in partnership with Lewis Energy Group. Lewis Energy Group will provide the land, natural gas, produced water and related infrastructure. Excess electricity will be supplied to the Texas grid.
The energy campus will be jointly owned by the United States and South Korea under their trade agreement. Construction will occur in phases, with initial generation expected to begin operating as early as 2029, subject to permits and approvals.
