Report Finds US Teens Can Access AI Nudify Apps
Researchers at the Tech Transparency Project downloaded 135 apps that could create nude imagery using accounts registered to 13 year olds, The Guardian reports. The researchers created four test accounts across the Apple App Store and Google Play, with parental controls enabled on two accounts.
The Apple account with parental controls downloaded 24 nudify apps, while the Google account with controls downloaded 51. Some apps were rated as suitable for children, and the stores did not request parental approval for the downloads. Researchers also bought a subscription through one account without an alert reaching the linked parent account.
Apple Inc. said it prohibits nudify apps and took action against apps named in the report. It also strengthened its rules to require developers to prevent and remove nonconsensual intimate imagery. Google said it suspended apps that violated its policies and restricted related search terms. The researchers found that some removed apps continued working on devices where they were already installed.
