Windlift Introduces GUARD Tethered UAV Platform After Successful Testing

Nov 10, 2025
Windlift has announced successful initial testing of its GUARD tethered unmanned aerial vehicle platform, designed to enhance national defense and commercial security operations. The GUARD systems can operate in extreme wind conditions and are aligned with U.S. and NATO defense initiatives.

Durham-based Windlift has completed successful initial testing of its GUARD tethered unmanned aerial vehicle (teUAV) platform and is preparing the system for market entry, announced in a press release. The GUARD platform is designed to expand the operational range of tethered UAVs and meet defense and commercial security requirements.

The GUARD system can operate in high winds where most tethered drones cannot, according to Windlift. Originally based on technology developed for airborne power generation, the platform’s design enables it to maintain stability and performance in extreme conditions. The company stated that the Naval Research Laboratory provided technical oversight during development.

Windlift said GUARD’s design supports Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) operations. The platform is positioned to meet emerging defense needs, including the U.S. Missile Defense Agency’s SHIELD program and NATO’s proposed drone wall initiative. The company also highlighted potential uses in maritime security, border protection, offshore infrastructure monitoring, and disaster response.

With $24 million in U.S. Department of Defense and Department of Energy contracts, Windlift plans to expand GUARD’s capabilities to include airborne power generation for remote operations. Future versions of the platform aim to deliver persistent, infrastructure-free aerial surveillance across defense and commercial sectors.
