Windsurf Unveils SWE-1 AI Models for Software Engineering

Windsurf has launched its SWE-1 family of AI models, designed to enhance the entire software engineering process, according to a press release by Business Wire. The SWE-1 suite includes three models: SWE-1, SWE-1-lite, and SWE-1-mini, each optimized for different workflows and user tiers.

The SWE-1 models are purpose-built to support the full software engineering lifecycle, not just coding. This approach allows the models to operate across multiple surfaces, handle incomplete work, and manage long-running tasks. The models are integrated into Windsurf's development environment, offering users seamless, context-aware collaboration.

Windsurf's CEO, Varun Mohan, emphasized that the SWE-1 models aim to accelerate software development by up to 99%, moving beyond traditional 'coding-capable' models. The models are available for use within the Windsurf Editor, with SWE-1 accessible to paid users and SWE-1-lite and SWE-1-mini available to all users.

The launch of SWE-1 marks Windsurf's entry into frontier model development, with performance competitive to foundational models for software-relevant tasks. The company plans to continue investing in its SWE models and expand its machine learning research team.
