Xanadu and HyperLight Advance Photonic Chips for Quantum Computing
Xanadu and HyperLight have announced a significant breakthrough in photonic chip technology, according to a press release. The companies have developed thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonic chips with waveguide losses below 2 dB/m and switch losses around 20 milli-decibels (mdB), setting new benchmarks for quantum computing performance.
This advancement is crucial for overcoming current limitations in scaling photonic quantum hardware. The chips were fabricated in a high-volume semiconductor production facility, indicating their readiness for commercial use in photonic quantum computing.
Zachary Vernon, CTO of Hardware at Xanadu, emphasized the importance of their collaboration with HyperLight in achieving these results, which bring them closer to delivering utility-scale photonic quantum computers. This achievement builds on Xanadu's previous successes, including the demonstration of the Aurora, the world's first fiber-networked photonic quantum computer.
